About the Center
The Water Center was formed in 2001 out of two long-standing centers focusing on water-related issues at the University of Washington. The Center for Streamside Studies was created in 1987 to help resolve the controversies concerning the management of forest, fish, wildlife, and water resources in the Pacific Northwest. The Center for Urban Water Resources Management was established in 1991 with an explicit focus on the consequences of urban land development on the region's water resources. Their combination reflects the belief that a wide variety of students, faculty, and off-campus collaborators can best improve the value of scientific research and educational outreach on water-resource issues and environmental health.
The Center is composed of an advisory board of outside professionals, which provides guidance on overall research and education, a director, and staff. Affiliated faculty and graduate students participate from multiple departments across campus. Financial support is provided by the Colleges of Engineering, Forest Resources, and Ocean and Fishery Sciences, the School of Public Affairs, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Earth Initiative, ADVANCE - Center for Institutional Change, local government agencies, and by research grants to single and groups of faculty affiliated with the Center.
For an overview of the Center and more details on funding, see our presentation. For more about our long-range goals, please download the Strategic Plan (483 KB pdf).
The Center maintains email lists through which we send out event announcements and job announcements. If you would like to be on either of these lists, please email cwws@u.washington.edu
